weLiveinBeijing is a social bloc community based in Beijing created by a Norwegian company. It is a social networking site mainly for people who lives in Beijing or elsewhere around the world. According to its official site, Bloc community focuses on engaging people in their own environment, arranging different activities such as as BBQ or parties. Furthermore, it also provide some real estate advertisement and online food delivery service for those who live in Beijing or hoping move to Beijing in the future.
This site have a basic web based app, but also provide app for iphone and android.
The official site has undergone several changes since I started to use it in early 2009 (i think…). At this stage, it remained its classical features like Bubbles (allow users to post their status or share links with people within that community), the main area in the middle of the website dominant with recent activities from users. Also, theEvent section provide up-to-date information about parties or events happening in Beijing. Weliveinbeijing offers a intimate experience for users to actually attend events listed on the site, especially for those who lives in Beijing, thus provide an opportunity for online users to actually meet up with each other. The most popular feature of this online cummnity is the Discussion Board, each user can categorize their own questions or topic they want to discuss with others. People within this community are always actively engage in discussions, whether it’s about politics, current news or just very simple daily life questions.
Their site is built on .NET 3.0/C# using WCF and Advance Distributed Caching on the Backend with MSSQL DB. (no idea what those are, looks complicated…), but I’d say it’s a pretty good site. Just very recent, they added a new feature, which also allowed user to check-in to places… It’s amazing to see the number of social networking sites are all using check-ins….
Their iphone app design is pretty simple and provide basic functionality for users to view messages, profiles, events, update information or simply post photos. I don’t have a iphone version of this app, I found the website based one is much easier for me to use, probably users cannot yet view the Discussion section on mobile phones. If you want to know more about China (all real stuff here!), join this bloc community and start posting your ideas:)
